LIHEAP in Maine – Help with Heating Costs for Seniors Costs for Seniors

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)—also called HEAP in Maine is a vital program that helps seniors and low-income households afford the cost of heating their homes during Maine’s long winters.

For many seniors living on a fixed income, this program can make a big difference by reducing monthly heating bills and helping prevent shut-offs during the coldest months.

LIHEAP Helps

  • Pays a portion of your home heating costs

  • Benefits are usually sent directly to your fuel or utility provider

  • May include emergency assistance if you’re at risk of running out of heat

  • Can help qualify you for additional programs like utility discounts and weatherization services

Eligibility is based on household income, size, and energy costs. Seniors may qualify even if their income is slightly above limits—especially if they have high medical expenses.

Applications are typically open from August through late spring (or until funds run out), so it’s important to apply early.
